me is hoping this rumor is true.

same here. then i can get the newer games such as Star ocean 4 (when it comes out) and Soul calibur 4...
z7shaft Wrote:I bet is a model with even more limitations.......
then in the future they will release a ps3 without hard drive (just like the psp, you have to buy the memory...)

Actually, that wouldn't be too bad. I mean, when I get a PS3 I plan on upgrading the HDD to something like 150 GB anyway. The only thing I care about is the expansion slots (MS, SD, etc.) and the internal wi-fi. I'll be keeping my PS2 after I get a PS3, so BC won't be an issue.
hell, a 20GB with no backwards compat would do me, my PS2 is going fine and that's cheap as realy. I would get one at that price
Check out this update to the rumor:

Quote:Wee were glad to bring you the news of the $299 Playstation 3 yesterday when it was still very much under wraps. Wee have told you yesterday that there will be a new Playstation 3 model. This is partly true. The changes to the new Playstation 3 model are only aesthetic. The new Playstation 3 model for the United States is the exact same one that launched in Japan a couple months ago. The specifications are identical to that of the regular 40GB Playstation 3 available today in the US. Sadly this new 40GB Playstation 3 will have the same shortcomings as its older counterpart in the respect that it will be missing backwards compatibility and will have no memory-card readers.

The new Playstation 3's will be shipping to US retailers any day. From what wee heard, the new consoles will be arriving to retailers Friday night this week, and will go on sale Monday. Demand is expected to be very high, but Sony is supposedly cutting down on supply of the new console.

The regular 40GB Playstation 3 will also be dropping in price to match its counterpart at $299, but sadly the 80GB Playstation 3 will only be benefiting from a $50 price-drop, to $449.99

As of Monday, January 28, 2008 there will be 3 Playstation 3 SKU's available in the US market.

40GB White Playstation 3 - $299.99 (missing B/C, 2 USB ports, and memory-card readers)
40GB Black Playstation 3 - $299.99 (missing B/C, 2 USB ports, and memory-card readers)
80GB Black Playstation 3 - $449.99 (software based B/C, 4 USB pots, has memory card readers)

No news on a 80GB Ceramic White Playstation 3 as of right now, but Sony is staying open to the idea. Their game plan as of right now is to move as many Playstation 3 units by March, 31, 2008 as possible, this has to do something with Warner's exclusivity deal, wee'll get back to you on this as soon as wee learn more.

Remember, it is still rumorama!
it better be a rumor i just bought mine at $400 :grrrrrr:
sony have pulled one out of the hat again this would sure kill the 360 pretty soon unless ms decide to respond to this cut if it happens that is that would mean people could expect a cheaper 360 as well if ps3 price is indeed cut to this level
if a ps3 was $300 = £150 i would implode
lmao
shouldn't this technically be in the Gaming place?
Quote:After rumors popped up last Monday that the PS3 may be in store for a new price cut, Sony was quick to shoot it down. However, more reports have been coming in that indicate Sony is doing SOMETHING funky with their PS3 lineup. Major retailers across the country have reportedly been receiving notices from Sony to discontinue selling the 80GB model. BestBuy.com has even removed the 80GB PS3 from their website, listing only the 40GB PS3. Target.com has changed the 80GB PS3 to ‘available in stores only’.

This leads to two situations - either the 80GB bundle is being revamped or its being discontinued altogether. The 80GB bundle with Motorstorm was originally supposed to be a ‘limited time offer’. Also, in both Europe and Japan, the 40GB model is the only model actively produced. Making only one PS3 model would go the long way in simplifying the PS3 lineup, which has confused consumers to no end.

Many have argued that Sony would be stupid to do this, as then there would not be a PS3 with PS2 compatibility(all PS3s can play PS1 games). However, as stated before, the US is the only market where a PS3 with PS2 compatibility is still actively produced. Sony has indicated that the majority of its consumers were least interested in a function that allowed them to play PS2 games. Going by sales numbers of Motorstorm, this may be correct - the 40GB PS3 regularly outsold the 80GB PS3 all throughout the holiday months, perhaps indicating that the majority of the consumers are buying the PS3 for PS3 games or Blu Ray playback, not PS2 games. Additionally, Kotaku reported that Sony is still looking to implement PS2 compatibility in the 40GB PS3 through software emulation, which means that the 40GB could possibly be able to play PS2 games at some point.
