Why is that weird that my slim has 1.50 kernel? I run a lot of the homebrew retro emulators for the NES, Genesis, SNES, etc. The only way I know how to do that is to use the 1.50 kernel...unless there is a new way.

it doesn't have the 1.50 kernel installed. there are versions of nes, genesis, snes, daedalus , gba and almost every other emulator that can run on the slim. written for the 3.xx kernel. even some old ones that worked on 1.50 work on 3.xx so that's probably it.
When I go into Recovery mode, and choose config, go to game folder homebrew I can switch between the 3.80 and the 1.50 kernel. I'm new to this whole thing but doesn't that mean I have the 1.50 kernel?

mine does too as well as everyone elses. the reason that is there is b/c the custom firmware is universal with the slim and phat psp's. if it's in one, it will be in the other, but only visually, not always physically. says 1.50 is in there but it isn't on the slim. says it is on the phat, and it is. it's impossible at the moment to run 1.50 on the slim b/c they didn't come with it. dax has claimed that it is a work in progress though. you can enable icons that appear on the slim, such as connected display settings on the phat, but it doesn't mean it will work, hardware reasons of course.
u don have 1.50 kernel
dax just didn't change the recovery menu even if it is set to 1.50 kernel it would run 3.xx kernel if 1.50 addon is not installed

could not agree more!
Makes sense. If it's not needed to run the old school homebrews then I guess I don't have to switch to that kernel (or lack there of) everytime I start up. Good to know.
What happens if you have a custom theme on say cfw 3.80 m33-5 and update to the newly released cfw 3.90 m33? Will it just erase over the old theme with the standard Sony theme? Or does it even affect the theme?
Yes. It will erase your theme because it is formating and rewriting the F0, which is equvilent to the WINDOWS folder in your C:
yes it erases everything and puts back the sony theme
