It's a good idea in theory, except for all those people who don't connect there PSP's to the net.
they will still be able to download from dax's website
so i don't see the problem

ps: i know you know, but think if you didn't! then i would post this post
pps: both sides win
I like the new feature.

the problem is that if they do release it on dax's site, others can easily rip, etc and do the same things they were doing before.

unless there was some sort of protection against, ie it can stay on ur pc for a maximum of 3 days, etc
imagine this - you download an installer file which when run, downloads, installs, and runs, the new custom firmware and then when done it deletes the leftovers. this would make it harder for others to rip. a simple extra bit of protection added to make sure you got it from dax's site and that it hasn't been tampered with gets rid of some of the other lowlife theifs as well (you know who you are - your not getting your sites name mentioned here).
another possible idea is that if he adds a mac filter to the installer then he could basically download a unique installer encrypted using the psp's own mac address. that would ensure you couldnt rip it or anything. it would be hard to perform realtime encryption of the installer however but perhaps it wouldnt be so hard - only the pro would know really, i aint no crypto expert. theres many ways he could protect his work, and i applaud him for trying.

one other thing - to download any custom firmware wee must have access to the net anyway so imho its a good idea doing it this way. my only concern would be his bandwidth requirements - hes gonna need a lot. this is of course if hes doing it the way i think he is.

quick calculation - compressed custom firmware installer ready to install is perhaps 20 meg (this is just to make the calc easier). ok now perhaps 1 million (probably a lot more) people downloading the custom firmware (obviously not simultaneously) so wee multiply 20 meg by 1 million sooooo 20 million meg which i believe is 20 terabytes. not so bad i hear you cry but that's just for a single version. interesting isn't it? :s
That does seem to be what he is gearing up for in some respects, he currently has about 10 sites mirroring his (old) site data but being the only distributors of code as widely used as this would rape anyone's server setup.
Yeah, he better be very prepared. Very.

Who knows, maybe he'll even have some RS/MU mirrors set up.
@ Anger +1
@ Anger , i only want to tells you one thing ...

If you really have to download the CFW through network , the size of the file will be 400 Kb as much , don't forget that any OFW eboot , is never distributed with the CFW.

Yes, that is true, but isn't the network update feature going to be implemented into 3.80 M33? which means wee won't be getting any CFW through network feature only after 3.80 M33

this means that DAX could of made the network update icon link back to his own ftp, or whatever and the psp user must get the Eboots, seperately and the installer seperately, thus bypassing sony's spoon
