18 Months? i seriously doubt that.
Think of how long it took for BluRay to come out... A lot of testing and stuff will be required, and that will take time.
Anyways, so which will be bigger. This, or the 50TB protein disks...

Blu-Ray had to deal with getting a whole lot of companies to support its new format and HD-DVD a competing format.
All they have to do is just add a USB adaptor to the chip and voila they have a product that can be sold and used by anyone.
But I highly doubt it'll happen considering how complex it sounds. Not to mention there will be a need to update operating systems.
i hope it does happen and wee start shifting away from disc type media.... it aways gets scratched up.... solid state memory is the best.. no heads to crash, no laser to misalign, no surface to scratch.. get rid of hard disk and cds in the next 10 years i hope

Agreed.
I know CDs can have a shelf life of a century or two but I can't go a whole year without scratching up my CDs.

Look at the expenses side.
Solid state memory is expensive. Optical disks are cheap. Thus optical disks will always be around.
Unless it gets a LOT cheaper, u would not want that to happen.

CDs shelf life isn't that good. They deteriorate over time. Won't last even close to a century.
