ZiNgA BuRgA Wrote:How?  iTunes is an example of an online music store.  One thing I disagree about it is DRM.  Obviously, they cannot support torrents - they have little control over it, and piracy is inevitable.  And, why would they, since they have online stores?

A possible solution would be free "trial" downloads of DRM'd music from online stores...

Well I partially agree with the torrents comment, however, their are some gaming companies moving to torrents to distribute update patches for their games. Blizzard is one of them (they aren't called torrents but if you read the description of what it does, connects to other peers also downloading from the server to provide higher dl speeds, it's basically the same thing with a different extension thrown on it), so why couldn't online stores distribute trials of albums in torrent format. Like for example, i download the torrent from itunes, let it download, and I have 20sec - 1minute previews of the songs so I can see if i like them or not, instead of having to select each one manually, download it, and open it up. I know streaming is even easier, but thousands of people x 1 file = bad idea. Then again.... companies can afford all that bandwidth usually., but the point is, they could support torrenting if they chose the right methods to build upon it, and then the MPAA ect would have nothing to bitch about except people who actually leech and don't pay for anything. Yes I am one of those people who don't pay for anything, but that aside, atleast I have reasons for doing so, which most are stated in this guys letter, whether he's lying out his donkey or not, I don't know. I do support the artists, I do support the authors, just as much as I respect the game developers. Which is why if I have the money to buy it, I'll go buy it instead of downloading. I suppose this makes me sound hypocritical in some ways but with the pressure of the MPAA and the RIAA pushing on and on about how bad the internet is, why don't they step in and do something more than just close down sites. That's not going to get them anywhere. If anything, they should be taking over the sites and letting us download things which they don't care about, and give out full album samples.

I don't know. I just hate the MPAA and the RIAA. I know they are doing their jobs and I know that people shouldn't download illegally, but people can't even go and rent a movie for 7 bucks around here unless they are old movies. I remember when you could go rent a game or movie for like 3 bucks and some change whether new or old and I'm only 18. It wasn't that long ago. I agree with them that some of it has to do with people downloading as the guy mentioned in his letter, but their is no way all of the increases on everything over the last few years is just because of illegal downloading.

Quote: Survey Suggests Parental Rules Matter In Encouraging Good Internet Behavior
Washington, DC  (May 22, 2007) —

The results of a recent nationwide survey released by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) show that illegal downloading of digital copyrighted works by youth (ages 8 to 18) has dropped by 24 percent in the last three years. The survey, first conducted in 2004, indicated that 60 percent of survey participants reported downloading software, music, movies, or games without paying for it; in 2006 the percentage of those who downloaded without paying dropped to 43 percent; and in 2007 the percentage decreased to 36 percent. Youth report that parental oversight is a significant motivator and key influencing factor in their online behavior.

And ages 8 - 18 is the primary age groups it starts. If it dropped that much in the last three years, then why are prices still going up. Obviously their are people everyday who stop downloading illegally if the percentages of younger people downloading illegally is dropping, especially since computers are common knowledge now. I mean they teach you how to surf the net in school, i mean common.

My main pepeive is the fact that the MPAA and the RIAA (or whatever it is for your nation/country/whatever) don't care about these figures and still hijack prices of things.

I guess I'm just an old fasion pirate who can't speak logically, but knows what he's trying to say in his head. If you don't understand something point it out I'll try to reword it for ya. I'm just fed up with these digital rights and what not when all they do is sit there a bitch and shut down sites instead of actively doing something more about it. Obviously shutting down sites, throwing people in jail, and bitching about it isn't getting them anywhere. You'd think after these last 6 - 10 years where piracy has become the new age, they would have figured out a better solution instead of just bitching about it. Atleast that's my opinion. If they truely wanted to do something about it, they would have. But instead, they sue the site owners for their money because that's all they are worried about is their dough. And that's how I see it anyways.
The problem is, game patches cannot be considered the same as music.  In the former case, game patches are usually free by nature, and it's usually, more or less the game developers' role to distribute them (ie they're obliged to do so).  Selling music, on the other hand, is not something free, thus can not be distributed so freely.

As for torrenting, the nature of how torrents work would make previewing a download difficult.  Also, it's more suited for a community nature, not a company «> customer type interaction.  This is because, torrenting would force customers to upload data as well as download, which usually means a lot of bandwidth drainage.  Also, some ISPs also have upload quota - I can see the complaints rolling in if people start exceeding it...
Finally, the idea of torrenting was originally to deliver large files to many users quickly, something which would probably be difficult for a single server.  However, in practice (on public trackers), many people limit their upload, causing torrents to be slower than "direct downloads" in most cases.  Thus, I think their current design should be sufficient.

As for renting, you can still rent new DVDs pretty cheap (most people borrow them and copy them, lol).

For the survey, well, at best, it's just a survey.  It relies on people to be honest (and considering that it's kinda asking about illegal activity, I wouldn't exactly believe them to be honest), and isn't necessarily representative of the population.

I agree that their method is not the best, especially after the Napster incident.  There have been many alternatives suggested, that I'll not go through them.

One interesting thing though, originally it was feared that tape recorders and VCRs, along with TVs and radios broadcasting movies and songs would cause sales of the two to go down.  In reality, they went up.
However, the issue at hand here is somewhat different.  What you hear on the radio may entice you to go out and buy the CD, due to the fact that radio quality is somewhat bad, and analogue recordings usually left many faults.  Nowadays, most things you find on torrent are fairly high quality, and there's really little motivation to go out and buy the real thing...
I still say it's a rather rediculous struggle between the people and the industry though. I don't see anyone denying that much. Lol. I've run out of thoughts. If I think of anything before this topic  dies though, I'll be sure to post :P

Oh, and off topic quick, do you have anymore gifs from Rozen Maiden :D One of my fav. animes. I love Shinku and the two "gardeners". ^^
