Alright people, I just got one of the 100,000 limited multi-player beta keys for Call of Duty 4, and after playing it, I've got to say that this game is positively BADASS!!
R-Trigger still fires your weapon and L-trigger still brings you into the aiming sight. The bumpers are still used for grenades, but now instead of being limited to frag and smoke you can assign a grenade type to each button. This means that you can have any two of the 5 or 6 grenade types. Clicking the right stick still melee attacks them, although you do have this awesome knife now. Clicking the left stick no longer brings up binoculars, but makes your character lower his weapon and sprint. Very useful. The face buttons have the same functions, A being Jump/Action, X being Reload/Exchange weapon, Y being switch weapons, and B handling your stance. What's new in this game is the use of the D-Pad. Up turns on night vision/IR, left switches your weapon to secondary fire (like a grenade launcher) and right uses your bonus. You get bonuses for completing certain actions within a match, like a 10-kill streak, 3 headshots in a row, etc. What's cool is the stuff these bonuses do. They can do anything from give you an all-seeing radar to calling in an airstrike to calling in an Apache that shoots anyone that isn't on your team on sight. In other words, it kicks donkey.
The maps they have in the beta are some of the best multiplayer maps I've ever seen. One map that I can't remember the name of takes place in a ruined middle eastern village. It has a fantastic mix of horizontal and vertical, with people running around the courtyard while others climb the apartment buildings for a good sniping spot. Awesome.
Anyway, there's my summary of the awesome-ness that is Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Come November, buy it. It'll be on 360, PS3, and PC.
