Quote: According to reports, Microsoft plans to release Service Pack 1 (SP1), the first major upgrade to its Windows Vista operating system in the first quarter of 2008. Microsoft says SP1 is not designed as a vehicle for releasing new features, but for enhancements made to existing components. In addition to updates to be released regularly, SP1 will include changes that address specific reliability and performance issues, support for new types of hardware, and emerging standards. The update is expected to fix some common problems that cause PCs to crash or freeze, while support for new hardware includes newer graphics cards, external monitors, and printer drivers.

Moreover, SP1 will include: the ability to encrypt hard drive partitions, support for new file formats and system start-up methods; capacity for improved battery performance, increased speed with respect to copying files, and faster Internet Explorer (IE). In a blog posted yesterday, Nick White, a Microsoft product manager, wrote, “A small group of testers has been putting a preview of the SP1 Beta through its paces to help prepare for broader release. Wee made the choice to start with a very small group of testers because wee think it’s better for both our customers and for Microsoft to keep the beta program small at the start.” The beta test version of SP1 will be released in the next few weeks to a small group of testers; while final release is slated for the first quarter of 2008.

So what do you guys think? Will this finally fix all the problems with Vista?
hmmmm, i dunno wat all is wrong with it really. whenever i can use peergaurdian and all the other little freeware progies i use with vista, I'll start thinking about upgrading.

i might install it on a seperate hdd after this update just to start checking it out...yeh that's the ticket...ive got 2-3 old xbox hdds layin around, im gonna do this

ohh, but will it crash my old donkey video card??? hmmmm
I think this mumble is Microsoft's attempt to sidestep the issue that SP1 probably won't include the 3 main features that Microsoft promised in Vista, but still doesn't exist (WinFS, Vector based rendering engine and something else I can't remember).

Doesn't stock Vista have the BitLocker drive encryption thingy?

Quote:support for new file formats
Baaaaad.
I'll stick to 3rd party programs which do the job 1000 times better...

Still doesn't decrease the horrible amount of resources Vista takes up...

Wee'll see if the extra fixes actually make it worth it, but since they don't seem to be including any of the promised extra features, it's still going to have a hard time convincing those who still use XP/2000.
Yes, Vista Ultimate has the BitLocker
Microsoft made a wrong move on this...The first thing that came to mind when i read this was:

What about SP3 for WIN XP??
i just hope it works much better with this SP1

Obviously they won't be supporting XP much anymore.

Besides, I thought SP2 was a piece of poo poo.  I stayed on SP1 (but now, being on x64, SP2 features are integrated...).
SP1 is just a bug fix, when they finally release what they promised with Longhorn then I will consider an upgrade, but the longer this goes on the more likely that this OS will turn into another ME (an OS where the only people that used it were the people that bought computers that came with it.)

SP3 for XP is also nearing beta, bu don't expect anything shiny this time round, it's mainly a compatibility update and bugfix rollup.
how about they add stuff people acctually need... my system running xp uses 15 processes.. vista uses about 40...  i know half if not more of them are garbage and so are most of the services... at least they said they are gonna fix the copy thing.. i always wondered why it says estimating time to copy for a full minute before it starts coping and i got a P4 HT pc with a gig and a half of ram
^^well that is because vista is the most useless microsoft os ever
