I used to love the times Winamp would forget to understand Japanese and just show gibberish or blocks *sigh*

And yeah, Sensei, Skype is horrible it makes me not want to log in because I'd get bombarded by messages I've already read elsewhere.
Haha, true! Winamp really had problems with displaying japanese. Still it was one of the greatest media players you could get.

Skype is horrible as an IM, I really miss MSN. The only good things about Skype are video/voice call quality which I never use.
Since Microsoft killed the custom nickname feature and tried to integrate social networks like Facebook, they failed horribly.
If you now think back you won't even find a messaging service which is as good as MSN was in its prime days.
[I guess wee should start a thread about this :/]
It was, loved the customisation and the ability to have it like a second taskbar.

I'm not even sure of that anymore. I still use skype for video calls because everyone is on it, but I think with a bit more time, Google hangouts could overtake, especially with free multi video chats.

Right now, the best IM service is Astra, which is used by Trillian. Problem is, nobody uses it and the mobile clients aren't too great either (slow dev).

It's no surprise the likes of WhatsApp gained so much ground so quickly - a missed opportunity for basically all well known IM services.

I wonder whether that's exactly Winamp's fault though.  Assuming you're using MP3, ID3 tags don't standardise character encoding, so if your system's encoding differs from the tagger's, it'll end up messed up.

As for Skype, my biggest gripe is it being a closed protocol - if I could use a third party client (without installing Skype at all) then I wouldn't care so much about the official client.
I've never had problems with Winamp displaying Japanese.
