I can't break your bones with a sword.

As stylish as blades are, they lack any distinct advantages over blunt weapons in most cases.
Skeleton Hoarde? Blades aren't going to do much but cudgel will sunder them with ease.
Big guy made of rocks? Blades will make a delightful tink noise, blunt weapons will pulverise them.
Cyborg Rebellion? Blades won't be much help against the robotic parts. Blunt weapons will grind them to dust.
Pirates? They'll parry and riposte any sword attacks. They don't know how to do that when up against a mace.
Big blob of ooze? Poking with a sword will have little effect. Smashing it with a warhammer will have a huge effect.
Blades are more effective against zombies, dragons, everyday people, and carp though.
Anywy my vote goes to the absent option for piercing weapons! Come on, how can you forget those? Spears, Crossbows, Guns, Bows and Daggers are way cooler than your silly Swords, Scythes, Katanas, Warhammers, Maces...

But most of those aren't melee. Spears are basically a lesser version of a sword.

... Not quite sure what the point you're making is though. I paired Swords and Katanas together as silly weapons that aren't as cool as guns or bows.

Swords slash stuff, katanas (Japanese swords) also slash stuff.

Sparker Wrote: [ -> ]Weaponry NerdThis kind of knowledge is important when you're a game master for a PnP game! Really!
Assassinator Wrote:You mean JRPG nerd?Eh, probably an all-purpose RPG nerd. I play everything from JRPGs, to WRPGs, to even PnP. Can't say I'm too fond of JRPGs nowadays though, since they tend to restrict you to a particular playstyle more often than not. Want to play as a gun-toting badass? Sorry! Got to wait until that character joins the party midway through! Want to punch a thief who 'borrowed' from you instead of forgiving him? Sorry! You can't punch his face in, you have to forgive him to advance the plot!
Granted, WRPGs have this too. But it seems to be a more evident issue in JRPGs.
