Tonight Sony will be pushing firmware update 4.31 for the PS3 and it will not mandatory thankfully.!
Because this is a non mandatory update - all signs point to it not (most likely) changing the PSN paraphrase (If the paraphrase were changed CFW users will lose PSN access until the new paraphrase is found out)

Tempest_Fire via Official PS3 Forums  Wrote:Hi everyone,

I’m posting this message to inform you that there will be a minor firmware update (v.4.31) released on the evening of Monday, October 29th.

There will not be PlayStation Notwork maintenance during this time; online play and access to apps will not be affected during the release of this update.

This is not a mandatory update. However, wee suggest you keep your systems updated with the latest firmware, as these updates further improve overall system stability and help provide you with the best online entertainment experience possible.

To update to v.4.31, select Settings from your Xross Media Bar (XMB)  > System Update > Update via Internet and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Either way expect a huge security update for the PS3 every soon, as the PS3's higher firmwares have been butt fudgeed like know other ATM - and wee all can smell a firmware update inbound....

Sony's next move in the cat n mouse game should be very interesting as LV0/LV1 keys are out in the wild and users that are/were stuck on firmware 3.55 for the past 3 years now have the chance to install CFW's for higher firmwares such as 4.21, 4.25 and even the latest 4.30 - ONLY from firmware 3.55 or a PS3 already on a CFW!!  (as of yet there is no new exploit that will allow these new CFW's to be installed on any OFW higher then 3.55 - without hardware hacking)

SO what im trying to say is:  If you want the chance of ever being able to someday (possibility very soon) hack and install custom firmware on your PS3 it would be wise NOT to update your PS3 - because the PS3 scene is booming ATM :)  And your chance could be nearing ;)
