yeah I've been playing FF1 through gba emulator in the past couple of days, and im in the last battle with Garland erm Chaos, it seems im underpowered by Chaos, lol

my current levels as follows

Knight Lv 59
Ninja Lv 59
Red Wizard Lv 59
Master Lv 58

maybe ill need to level up more to match Chaos, lol
Lol, that's over leveled if you ask me. In DoS and 20th anniversary editions I normally beat him at around level 40 to 50 and in the NES one, around level 30.
^
hmm i don't know if the difficulty is the same in gba version over the others you've mentioned, maybe ill try later if i can beat him (chaos always cast tsunami and blaze having hits for 200-300hp)
DoS (Dawn of Souls) is the GBA version and 20th anniversary is the PSP one which is based off the GBA one. All I can suggest is cast Barfire and equip everyone you can with ribbons. Unfortunately tsunami and cyclone are non-elemental so you have no way to resist their damage.
if you have not tried
use the Giant's Glove  in battle with your attacker
as the cast Saber when used in battle
also Fast/Haste help as well
may be use the Healing Helm
as the cast Heal when used in battle
the items do NOT  get lost when used

a good thing to do is with you main attacker
pump the hit rate and attack

one main attacker
a main healer (heals ever turn)
the 2 others
a mix of both
Heal's healing power is weak and in the NES version it's downright useless.
If you want, you can get the Rune Staff from Tiamat when you fight her in the Shrine of Chaos. It casts Heala.

I had another strategy to suggest, but you're not using Black and White Wizards.
Final Fantasy 1....good time goood times.

I suggest you get the item called "Excalibur". (If you haven't got it yet.)
wow yeah ive beaten Chaos lol here's what i did (ive checked this thread after finishin the game), it seems ryu's strategy is the same as ive used ehehe

use giant gloves in every attacker (mainly the knight and the monk) then redwizard casts haste onto them, i let ninja also help heal the party while red wizard uses curaga in members below 500hp, also wasted megalixer and 2 elixer (yeah i won't need it after the game), then i always keep my party not below 500 hp or some of them may die

ive also used a white robe (it casts invisira, don't know the effect but it also helps lol)

and yeah its so hard that your only magician is the red mage/red wizard, you can't equip some stronger spells

anyways thanks also for the help guys, im now going to play FF2 also in dawn of souls version hehehe

and before i left this thread my hour to beat this game is around 09 hr 52 min

It increases evasion which reduces the number of hits an enemy can get against you. Personally, when possible, I prefer using Blink. The Ninja and Monk could've share the Defender sword around which casts Blink.
@sparker,

wow i never knew that defender sword can cast blink, hehehe

anyways thanks for the tip maybe ill use that in another playtrough
