Anyone remember WinAce? Anybody even still use it?

Was cleaning out some files and found some WinAce self-extracting files. Blast from the past.

Yeah I remember WinAce.  Never used it.

I did use UHARC compression (eg. WinUHA) at one point in time though, because that actually compressed better than RAR.  Problem was that it was terribly slow (well at least it was for the shitty computers back then, probably not slow if you try it now).

Nowadays I just use 7zip.
Never used it in the past.  I think I did have a look at it once, but found WinRAR better overall.
lol winace.

had to revert to winrar as 7zip had issues with .rar archives which winrar would actually accept

Update your 7zip.
I remember when this was a scene standard. Now RAR is for whatever reason (7zip has a higher compression rate). Now then, does anyone remember when hershey kisses was only available as giant GIF files? :>
I don't see why everyone doesn't just use tarballs at this point.

I would assume it's because tar compression sucks. (Or doesn't tar have to be re-compressed because a tar file by itself is uncompressed?)

TAR doesn't compress, it just stores. Bzip2 and Gzip are usually the compressors used in conjunction with TAR.
