I could turn up the monitor contrast...  then again, most LCD screens can't display more than 6-bit colour...

Nothing to do with screens.

6bit for monitors refers to 6 bits per color component, rather than 6 bits all together, so it's actually 18bit.  The total amount of colors it can display is (2^6)^3 = 262144.

the amount of colours it can try to display has nothing to do with how well it displays them.
