I believe you can renew it indefinitely though. Paid domains you'll need to renew each year as well (unless you wish to pay in advance).

You never know whether someone's still going to be running the server in the future.
Keep a local copy if you want to see it again years down the track. Just set up a personal server on your own computer if necessary (if it's a PHP/MySQL environment, just grab something like XAMPP which is really easy to set up).

Most paid hosts too. Of course phishers take that into consideration, and in the end, it's more economical to be taken down on a free host.
