This kind of stuff is actually done in practice.
I'm pretty sure last time I checked, WD had the normal MyBook or whatever they're called external drives, then you have MyBook for Mac. What's the difference? The Mac ones are formatted for Mac and have Mac versions of whatever software it comes with. And ofcourse, the Mac version is more expensive. Formatting takes 5 minutes, and the software should be worth the same, so yeah...
