"Worst that could happen" is usually used in a relative context though.
But in an absolute context, it's probably dependent on on who the subject is. The worst thing that could happen to someone may not be the same thing for someone else. You may have a worst thing, but beyond a certain point, it probably won't matter to you - in which case, you've reached your "maximum". That's assuming you have a maximum degree of care.
If there's no subjectivity, well, wee don't have an objective method of comparing events...
Which is worse - being slapped in the left cheek or on the right?

You could die. That'd be pretty bad.
Seriously, though, 'the worst thing' depends on who you are and what the situation is.

I think death is far from the worst thing that could happen
I mean, it sucks, yeah, but, that's it, its over
Many things which might not be quite as suckish, but will haunt you for the rest of your life are far worse imo, but, as stated, this is a subjective topic
Also, i agree with the topic in general, though im not a particular optimist and don't subscribe to the whole silver lining theory; yeah, it could be worse, but that doesn't mean it doesn't suck what happened

Too many suckish things can happen...In the end there's no worse thing ever...at some point it'll suck so bad that you won't even care anymore.
