Not sure how many of you will be interested in this, but there was a content held in the Queensland University of Technology (fairly close to where I am at now, in fact) where 20 teams were given the task to design and make a whole game in 48 hours straight.
I believe teams were limited to 6 people each; 16 of the teams were amateurs, and the other 4 "pros".
Arstechnica have a fairly long article detailing the events, split into three parts; at the time of writing, only the first two parts are up:
