Not sure how many of you will be interested in this, but there was a content held in the Queensland University of Technology (fairly close to where I am at now, in fact) where 20 teams were given the task to design and make a whole game in 48 hours straight.
I believe teams were limited to 6 people each; 16 of the teams were amateurs, and the other 4 "pros".

Arstechnica have a fairly long article detailing the events, split into three parts; at the time of writing, only the first two parts are up:

If you're perhaps interested in game development, it may be an interesting read.
i wonder how they will smell after the 48'th hour of work, lol

anyways ive seen some of it yesterday in ars, and they take it seriously, i bet more 8bit goodness in their works, hehehe
They do something like this in ireland every year too at Tipperary Institute of Technology.

Some people in my games development course done it this year (2011) with 4 people on each team.
Interesting.
(though not surprised that it's being done elsewhere, just posted this for the article if anyone was interested)
My university is going a one night game dev contest this saturday.

teams are entered and each team picks 3 themes out of a hat and has to make their game based on those 3 items they pick.

They start on the saturday, and don't stop until the same time on the sunday.

I did it last year as a sprite artist for a team, out game was pretty cool and wee won the "People's Choice" award. I got a free copy of Rock Band: Green Day for PS3.
Nice!
