HELP!! I'M FREAKING OUT!!! Both slots are working perfectly.

Edit: I updated the bios of my mobo (without precaution) and it's still showing up 512mb :(
Sounds like Windows is only reporting that.
Performance shows only 512 usable ....
Wierd indeed...are both memory the same?
Frecuency , and is your bios setup correctly?
im out of ideas

EDIT : i saw you updated bios , go inside it and check where is memory options.

Just switched into XP and it's the same..

Tried messing it and boom... still the same Whyowhy

Both ram are the same 512mb ddr400 but different brand.
How much Ram support your Motherboard?

Check your Ram Specs and make sure your mobo support it.
Make sure in bois both slots (channels) are working equal?
Like you say your ram is the same specs? check it good.
The wierd is your Z App is showing the new Ram also.

Maximum is 2gb. I have an old school pc ya know..I'll try that.. thanks I'll report later

No.
For me its that the Ram modules are not the same.
Make sure about everything of the specs.
Spot the difference...

there you have it , if you can change the Ram.
