Well, not too surprised that a Skype network operator can basically see all traffic which passes through Skype.
Calls have always been routed to a central server rather than directly to the person you're conversing with (this is often the case with most IM/chat software, since they don't want users to do port forwarding), so theoretically, Skype could've always done this without Microsoft.
There's probably not as much privacy around the place as you might think there is.

which raises the question, is anything wee do on the web actually privatised? What is privacy? do companies even care anymore?

did companies ever care? it's always been my question to people who think companies are not nice to their consumers, they're not trying to be your friends, to them your another statistic in their sales.
