TF2 will be free forever, it's true.
During this week, it will be free and hats and whatnot will be accessible.
After this week, I think it reverts to a premium system where only those who have actually brought the game can access crafting and hats.
People who have already brought the game get a hat as a way of saying thanks.

For those who actually bought the game (ME) wee at least get a hat called proof of purchase.  . . . The only other upside for me is now my IRL friends are playing.
