Have a Nintendo DSi XL here (not mine) and just looking into hacking it.
Have been reading a bit, but I'm sure I've gone through a lot of old/outdated info and not exactly sure what's relevant today.

Seems that you need a flashcart to do anything and seems that the Acekard 2i is the best 2nd gen flashcart these days (3rd gen is perhaps a bit too excessive - this is mainly for use with homebrew and NDS ROMs).  Any comments or perhaps suggestions on a good place to buy from? (I'm in Australia, somewhat avoiding eBay in case of fakes)

Also, unless my understanding is wrong, it seems that most of these flashcarts, which support additional memory act as an adapter for the memory card?  Is the SD slot on the DSi ever used?
In fact, what is the use of the SD slot on the DSi?  It seems that only music can be stored on it.  Maybe photos too, though it seems the NDS stores a lot of stuff to its internal memory...

Thanks for responses!
I think I got mines from was called something like Ozmodchips. Lemme check.

I think this is it: http://www.ozmodchips.com/
Thanks.  Seems a little expensive - just found http://www.bamboogaming.cn/ - which seems to be legit.
Well yeah you need a Flashcard Zinga, a Acekard2i should work fine, just you should have a DS Lite somewhere around. In case the DSi XLs Firmware was updated Acekards will be blocked, then you need a DS Lite to flash the Acekard with the newest firmware bypass.

Next thing is, almost all flashacards need a additional MicroSD card to act as a memory since as far as I know no Flashcard is yet able to run in DSi mode. Ever since the DSi, DS have two modes:

DSi Mode runs the CPU at normal speeds, the cameras are available and apps running in DSi Mode can also access the SD Slot.

DS Mode which essentially acts like a standard DS Lite, when you put a normal DS game into the DSi that isn't DSi enhanced, the CPU will downclock to DS Lite levels and all extra hardware from the DSi will become unavailable, that's why flashcards can't make use of the DSi own SD slot.

Like said, as far as I know no homebrew or flashcard was yet able to be run in DSi Mode, so these restrictions apply for now.

Hope I could help you^^
I got my AceKard 2i from gbatemp for like $15. Super cheap, and it works great. \o/

edit: $12 :D

(although it took a hundred years to arrive lol)
Also got a DSi, is an AceKard better than a R4? Want to buy one.
Acekard 2i is the best flashcart, imo. Mostly because it supports AKAIO firmware which has been reported to spoon all over anti-piracy measures, frequently breaking the AP on day 1. (case in point: Pokemon Black.)
Don't get an R4 unless you plan to get the Wood R4 firmware... which is just a R4 version of AKAIO, but with slightly inferior anti-AP features.

You will need to put a micro-SD into the flashcart so it can hold the firmware and roms. A 2GB microSD should do fine, even a 1GB card is enough for me.

I am not sure if the 2i is compatible with a DSi XL, I know it's good with regular DSi's.

As far as a DSi's internal microSD, I wouldn't really bother. That's mostly for apps and spoon purchased from the nintendo store. (Unless it needs a microSD to run, in which case it's derp)

Basically, once you get past the hassle of locating a flashcart/other homebrew-enabling hardware for your DS, it basically becomes a cakewalk to run whatever.

Yo ho, me harties, yo ho!
if you're in the U.S. i recommend http://www.realhotstuff.com/-c-125_102.html it was 18 bucks and arrived in 3 days

if you don't mind a wait http://www.0shippingzone.com/acekard-acekard-p-319.html $14.85 took about a month to get
Nope I tried Acekard 2i, R4i-SDHC is the best right now, avoid the fakes. Anyways look at there site at http://www.r4i-sdhc.com/.
Thanks a lot for the info everyone - really helps :)

I presume this pre-updated one will work?

EDIT: free shipping within US only - should've expected that.  +$22 shipping to Australia makes it like $40 :/  I guess it's not that much still.
So either $26 and find an old DS to update with, or $40 and save the hassle...

Need to see the firmware version on the thing...
Bought yesterday, so probably has one of the latest firmwares.
EDIT: version 1.4.1A - so I guess it would work.

Lol, SD slot on the device sounds useless.
