ZiNgA BuRgA Wrote:Telstra is ALWAYS ghey.

So is Optus. U have to use a small company to get best prices. The large known companies all rip u off.

Peacefully Disturbed Wrote:Yeah that's pretty bad, with my ISP I can get 10 MB/s with a 100GB monthly limit (they rarely enforce that though) for around $50 CAD (about $55 Australian).

That's not Australian prices.

Australia is VERY backwards in terms of internet connection.

Anything faster than 512mbit/s is VERY expensive here. 1.5mbit cable is like AU$80+. ADSL2 is like $40 for 10gb cap/month (10gb is poo poo for ADSL2 speed. u'll use it up in like 2 days if u try). if u want like 100gb cap, it'll be VERY expensive, like in the hundred of dollars.
Unlimited 4MB Cable Broadband
unlimited 16mbps adsl2 here..

that's what I'm using right now lol because its faster than my slowed down Bigpond connection :)

ZiNgA BuRgA Wrote:You could've shoved the blame on Telstra (dad won't complain, as Telstra probably won't respond).  But then you said something about knowing the password, so that could be a different issue...

Even if i do blame Telstra, dad would still later talk to me and blame me about "well if you hadn't downloaded that much, this problem wouldn't happened". About the password, when (if he does, and i hope he doesn't) he finds out about the speed, i will just act innocent and as if i have no-clue on what's going on too :P.

but when he asks what have i been downloading that it has got to that much, what should i say? (if he finds out i still use torrents, I'll be eXx1l3d from the computer permanently, because he has already warned me 2 times about using torrents :() i could say I've been getting podcasts of stuff (which i have been) but that won't account for 8.5GB

the main problem here isn't the ammount of downloads i have and the speed (because 12GB dn/up and 8MB/s is good for me) is that because Telstra changed their billing process 8 days into the month, they have confused me and then accounted both the 1st and 2nd bill together which has caused my speed to slow down.

Why are your neighbours all so stupid? It's not that hard to set a password.

Simple, don't say you downloaded much at all.  Say that Telstra's download meter is probably screwed, just like Telstra themselves.

Firstly, how the hell will he found out that you've used torrents?

i don't know lol, there is a court (street thingy) behind my house so it could be anyone. but there are these one neighbours who wee really hate, and i wish so much that its theirs that I'm using :P

he knows that i have to be the one that downloads because there isn't anyone else who downloads files that are that big. and he has even proved that before. and he isn't that stupid to realise that telstra screws up like that, especially since he works for them.

the time he found out torrents, unfolded like this:

originally when he looks at the download meter, he asks me what i have been downloading, and I've just been lying and saying music from friends via email (which is crazy because as if i would receive songs through emails :P but i did say that).

one day in "The Age" (victorians will know of this, its a famous Melbourne Newspaper) they have heaps of sections, and one is the "Green Guide" (which is the TV schedule for the week) and it isn't just the guide, it has Tech articles in the first half. each week they do a special on something i.e. The YouTube Revolution, when Vista came out it did a big thing on that etc. anyway this week it was about P2P Downloading, and in the article it talked a large bit about BitTorrent and how lots of Aussies download shows like Lost ahead of when they are screened here. and they had about how it works (which most of it was wrong, but Dad believed it).
Now dad got the Green Guide on Thursday (and every other Thursday) and on Saturday, while on the computer, he walked in to my room while i was on the computer and he looked at the computer screen and then to the system tray near the clock and saw a logo like this: [Image: bittorrentuq2.jpg] and says "what's this?" then double clicks on it. i say "a downloading program". then he asks things like what are you downloading and i say PSP games (i had 3 of them going at once) and he warned me never to use them again.

the next time, he was just looking at the Registry Editor at what programs I've had on the computer, and he saw BitComet (which by the way i only used once to see what the GUI looks like and how good it is etc) and warned again that if he ever finds me using Torrents again, that i would be eXx1l3d from the computer forever (which he can do because he was the one that bought the computer, and that's the reason why I'm planning to get a new one).

lately i have been using CCleaner and going into the Registry Editor (type "regedit" in the Run command in the start menu) and searching for "torrent" and deleting every result (and i have to do this everytime i open up uTorrent) so that he can find out, because I'm not going to give up using Torrents ever
Man you Aussies really get screwed over with your internet.

You maybe the only nation to cover an entire continent but wow...

I'm the techie of my family so I get away with everything.

Don't say you downloaded any big files.  Just say you went to a webpage, then suddenly realized how slow it was.  If that won't work, you can always say that you were download a Linux distro, but it corrupted, so you deleted it.  Just to add confusion, just say there was a MD5/SHA1 mismatch.
Telstra has screwed up many times in the past - just point out that Telstra has the lowest customer satisfaction rate amongst all the ISPs (If I recall correctly, about two years ago, it was about 65% customer satisfaction O_O)

Well, you'll have to be smarter next time...
You can hide the system tray through the Group Policy editor.  I know that hiding particular systray icons is possible, but I forgot how.  I think I had to make my own application for that.
Alternatively, edit the icon (use Resource Hacker).
For registry editing, how much does your dad know about the registry?  You can always blame spyware/adware you know...

Also, give this little thought to him.  Why are torrents so bad?  It's legal, since you see them on legal sites, on the cover discs of PC magazines etc.  It can be used for illicit purposes, but the same applies for the internet.  Both torrents and the internet is a great resource, but it can be mis-used - just like the internet, you can't simply say torrents are bad.

uTorrent doesn't write registry entries, If I recall correctly - it stores stuff inside the Application Data folder, so it might be worth considering that.  If you don't think that's enough, well, your only hope would be rootkits, though they may be a little difficult to configure properly (and if you stuff up the configuration, you could sorda stuff yourself up).

A linux distro is 700mb usually. he downloaded 8.5gbs...

hmmm.... hard to think of something big enough as an excuse. Ur dad doesn't like u downloading videos, does he? otherwise, u can use that as an excuse.

ZiNgA BuRgA Wrote:For registry editing, how much does your dad know about the registry?  You can always blame spyware/adware you know...

that's not going to work. if he knows enough about the registry to look in it, he probably knows that addware won't insert an entry called something like "BitCommet".

They just don't like him downloading heaps of stuff probably. Like my parents don't like me downloading too much poo poo either, especially games and stuff.
