ok i am thinking of getting a new PC for myself that obviously isn't too expensive but not one of those AUS$899-1200 crappy computers. now i have had in my mind that i want a Notebook/Laptop but i am starting to debate with myself if i should get a Desktop instead and i was hoping you guys could help.
now i know people are going to reply with "depends what you want and what you are going to use it for" so I'm going to try and answer that now.
In a PC i am looking for: Wireless Internet capabilities (like laptops, if i were to choose a desktop), largish HD that has to be at the very minimum 100GB so the bigger the better (I'm thinking maybe 200GB+), decent RAM which i know i can upgrade if it is small when i buy it but i would prefer it already comes with a fair bit (at minimum 1GB, so I'm thinking 2GB), don't care too much about the OS but it has to come with a Windows one (either XP or Vista {i prefer XP but i can just install that over vista if i want}, I'm not a Mac type-of-person, family already has a macbook and i prefer windows :P) and then i will dual-boot it with Ubuntu or even triple-boot it with the other windows, DVD/CD burner and reader which comes standard in almost all computers nowadays anyway, decent processor and video & audio cards. that's about it :D
remember i live in Aus not the US if that has to do with anything :D
the reason i was thinking of a laptop is because i like being able to move it around if neccessary, and when i want to print homework etc i have to take it downstairs (my house is double story and my bedroom is up top and the printer is on the bottom level).
i was thinking about a Desktop because now people are able to do wireless printing so i might be able to print from my room, and it seems that you can get a eg AUS$2000 Desktop PC with way better features than a AUS$2000 notebook.
I say go with a Laptop. You get portability, they usually have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in, and most come with widescreen displays.
Personally, I'm looking at a MacBook because they have good starting specs, not too clunky, and the quality of Apple's products is second to none. They start at US$1099 and you can upgrade the specs like having a 200 GB HD instead of a 120, and 2 GB ram instead of 1GB. IMO, I think they're worth it

thanks for replying metal_gear08, i know you prefer MacBooks, but there is know way that you are able to convince me to get a mac :P i just like windows way more for lots of reasons including just the GUI in general, being able to tweak basically everything, almost everything is built for them, it has a way larger range of software which you can crack if you don't want to buy it etc :D
Actually, I hated Macs with a passion until they announced the Intel Macs and Boot Camp. Now, you can boot both Windows and OSX. In fact, when I get a MacBook this fall, I'm gonna install Vista alongside OSX.

i don't hate Macs with a passion although i did used to but now i will use them, its just if i have a choice over Mac's OSX or Windows XP or Vista, i would choose the Windows all the time :D
I like the functionality of OS X, but I don't like how crippled it is in the software category, so I always stuck with Windows. But now, I can get both!
So just moving the laptop is the only incentive for the laptop? Have any plans of carrying it to school or friends, for example?
For the desktop option, you could even consider using a long-donkey ethernet cable, if wireless isn't an option (one of my friends bought a 30m ethernet cable for that reason :P). Generally, long-donkey ethernet cable is cheaper, but obviously doesn't look as good.
I personally went for desktop + PSP for portability, as laptops are sorda big and chunky to carry around. Though I'm kinda considering a laptop as I'm usually at Uni for long hours with nothing much to do (cause I have to wait for parents etc).
I'd assume you already have a PSP, so it's up to you what you really want to do on the go.

i don't really have plans on taking it to school because wee aren't allowed to (although i wish i could) and out of my friends, I'm sort of the "computer brains" so ther isn't much point me taking my current laptop (which is a good one but it is the family's eventhough I'm the majorly dominant user. i want a new PC so i have the whole computer from myself, can't get eXx1l3d from it, no restrictions on anything, and my actions on the computer can't be monitored by my dad. and i hate the 60GB HD on it because i can't really store anything, including dual-booting Ubuntu so i have to rely on
Wubi). and I'm not a LAN gamer, i only play the occasional GTA: Vice City or N64, SNES emulators, flash games etc.
with my router/modem came a wireless USB adaptor but that is already being used with another laptop in this house/
i was thinking a desktop because of getting more features i.e. HD space, RAM etc for cheaper than the same amount of features but in a Notebook.
i was thinking Notebook/Laptop because of portability so i can do stuff on it anywhere, including just having it on my lap while watching downloaded shows/movies or DVDs on it. and in a few years time i will (well hopefully) be going to University and i would be prepared already for that with a laptop.
i do have a PSP (3.40 OE-A) but i only really use that for Homebrew, including mostly downloaded ISOs. i used to put shows on there like The Chaser's War On Everything so i didn't have to turn on my computer (which is fast but i just couldn't be bothered turning it on).
laptop - to a point. laptops are more easily 'borrowed'. everybody sees that you have a laptop and they get ideas.
"why is his laptop better than mine? i know I'll 'borrow' it" says some random dude.
Another one of the reasons I want to get a MacBook is that it is thin enough to carry in my school bag and light enough to carry comfortably. As for security, if you are careless enough to let it get 'borrowed', there's always LoJack.
