Oh dear, since I got home the laptop has started complaining about corrupt files... small temp ones at first... but now config files, startup programs and normal programs are going one by one.

Seeing how the problem seems to be incrementing.. would you call it a dying drive?

I'm copying over my docs to the second drive now but it looks like I've already lost quite a few things, then I'll run a full chkdisk overnight... hopefully it'll sort it out but I have my doubts...
When I got Virut the same thing happened to me except I was able to recover everything except EXEs.

Pretty much because I do. (I've encountered such viruses before, there are no explicit symptoms and it's not effecting multiple drives, which it would usually do)

Alternative POV please.
boot into a Ubuntu LiveCD, that'll tell you if it's failing or not. (That's how I knew mine was, Windows didn't tell me spoon)

How so? Does it have a tool to check HDD health?
Something like that lol. When I booted into Ubuntu, it's like "HEY YOUR Spoon IS FAILING".
Senseito, give me an hour to find a repair boot CD. If your HDD does not have a hardware problem this CD is your best shot of fixing it. This CD has every tool you can think of.

You really should stop using the drive, or do as little as possible until you can run a disk check, preferably one that doesn't run in Windows.

I don't have any blank disks ^^'

I'm prepared for such a scenario though, I've got a legit Vista install on the other drive. It won't be the first time I've had to let chkdisk run to sort out a lot of stuff - only difference is that it's more severe this time around and I thought the drive might be dying...
