If I dump a UMD that I buy (which I would do, since I hate how loud the UMD drive is, not to mention faster loading speeds, easily carry multiple games around etc), I would play it via an ISO, which is a benefit of custom firmware.  The dumping is legal under fair use, so I fail to see anything illegal here.

Yup. ZiNga is exactly correct.
cfw is, and never was illegal.  That was the genius of DAX's installers.

He never distributed a single copyrighted file.
- You would supply your own UPDATE eboot.pbp (obtained from $ONY themselves)
- Then DA updater would extract and modify the modules on the fly.

Also, I think it is a bit presumptuous for Jomann to say "DAX left because of $ONY harassment".
There was never any indication of that.
One time DAX faked his own retirement (stating he feared $ONYs legal menace to hackers) and then made releases under the alias of a HM33. A supposed Russian hacking team.
Maybe that is what you were thinking of there  ?
