You mean the crystal eye right?
the ruby in FFI was just a normal ordinary you find in the Cavern of Earth so the light warriors can feed the Giant to satisfy him so he walks out of the way.

The Crystal eye is what Astos 'borrowed' from Matoya.

Remember Final Fantasy I?

Remember the Marsh Cave?

Well, DQIII's Lakeside Cave is pretty much that, only less maze like. You have Vampires which can cast Icebolt (10 - 30 damage), Deadstools which have a normal attack that inflicts sleep AND a breath attack that inflicts sleep and finally Rabidhounds which seem to have high magic evade and can lower your defense. Evil evil dungeon.
