media player classic which is part of K-Lite Codec Pack
Yep, Media Player Classic For the win!  I'm not exactly a VLC fan, but I guess VLC has it's uses.
Anything that can basically play what needs to be watched. Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, PowerDVD are my main three.
WMP, PowerDVD :)
I can't stand MPC, it gets on my nerves for some reason.
I haven't run into any problems with VLC yet, it's the only thing that gets MKV files right for me.

Don't have DirectShow stuff properly installed?
Meh, that's probably the main reason why people like VLC - saves you from installing DirectShow stuff.
PowerDVD
well quitime is versitile and its usually my backup but i usually use wmp or jet audio
QuickTime installs a whole load of unnecessary background services etc.
QuickTime Alternative For the win!
WMP can't do anything without DirectShow.  Even so, it's not a great DirectShow player.
PowerDVD / WinDVD I find aren't too bad for DVD playback, actually.  I still use MPC for DVDs though.
I personally never found anything special about JetAudio...

Anyways, MPC still works best, IMO - as long as you have the necessary DirectShow components.
well wmp with divx codecs installed is prety good actualy
