Yes I've done the thing that all laptop owners dread. I've cracked the screen. It was in it's bag, a high quality Targus laptop case I'll have you know, in the back of the car. As my dad drove out of the carpark at school the bag slid across the rubber flooring in the back of the car and into the door. The back seats have been taken out the car to turn it into a van so it just slid. Now, about 2/3 of the way up and slightly to the left of center there's a tiny little crack. The screen still works fine but the backlighting and colours aren't quite right around the crack. Every time I move the screen it gets ever so slightly bigger.
FUCK!
I know it's not really visible but it starts in the bottom right corner of the EP logo and spreads out downwards and outwards.
Now onto my question. Does anyone know of anywhere other than eBay to get laptop screens for cheap? Also does anyone know if the Toshiba Satellite A300 series use the same screens across the range? The reason I ask is low-end Satellite A300 screens go for roughly £50-60 on eBay whereas a screen advertised as for my model (A300-1BZ) are about £70-80.
Also looking at my S.M.A.R.T. status it looks like I should replace my hard drive soon as well. The load cycle count has exceeded Toshiba's recommended life span and the power-on ours are also approaching the recommended life span. That and a re-allocated sector count north of 100 is worrying me a bit. Then again this laptop has had a pretty hard life. I'd be seriously pissed of if it died because I like it so much and I'm off to Uni in September and too hard up to by a new laptop before going.
Oh well...
