It has happened to me with devices other then PC before I believe.
i know it works for older systems, but doing it to new ones is too expensive right now
works on my windows ME dell desktop
I've rebooted many computers by Shocking with static lol.
For me its been a chance based system. Sometimes it freezes, sometimes it doesn't and sometimes it shorts out leading me to break the entire case apart in blood rage.
i had an old packard bell which i virtually beat the spoon out of and i never had such issues..... though i did eventually have 4 blown capacitors on the motherboard....
For a second I thought you meant shock like static electricity and I was like :o

I have not come across a problem like that in recent years. Hard drives are, as you said, the most likely to be affected, unless they are SSD. But why would kicking it cause a lock up? I can't see what it could be...

Does your computer have any loose components at all?

Not really.  But even if something came loose, simply pressing the reset button shouldn't be the solution >_<
Bumped into my computer once and it froze. Never tried it again o_O
