okay, so I have a 32gb ipod touch which is jailbroke with blackrain. I was just installing an app from the app store and my ipod crashed and powered off. so I hold the power button and the apple logo comes on the screen followed by the itunes icon and usb icon saying to connect to itunes. I do that and itunes says it's detected an ipod in recovery mode and u need to restore. so this is where i would usually just rerun blackrain to boot the ipod but now when I try it says running and geohot's pic shows on the ipod then it says done wait for reboot but after waiting a while the screen on my ipod just goes black and stays that way.... any help would be very much appreciated. plus I would rather not restore my device if possible.
thanks
Do I get this right, you have a iPod Touch 3rd gen and have a tethered Jailbreak?
well, as a last resort, you could try and restore it to 3.1.3 through iTunes (you could restore it to 3.1.2 if you have your shsh saved by cydia and follow this guide)
and run spirit to jailbrake it
and hopefully you backed up your apps with iTunes or some other app on cydia
otherwise start over
yep it's a 3rd gen and a tethered jailbreak. usually whenever i need to reboot I just run blackrain again and it reboots and works fine.  i would rather not have to restore if possible.. I hadn't backed up my ipod in a while and really don't want to lose the stuff that I don't have backed up. is there any other way of getting the stuff off my ipod when it's like this?
Well when the black screen comes up try to see if it came far enough to initialize SSH and/or try to access it with a USB app like iPhone Browser or iPhone Folders.
SSH and filesystem access are pretty early in the boot process so you might be lucky.
do not run black rain from your desktop, it fails.

i assume your running vista.

right click and press "run as administrator"
restore your ipod on 3.1.3 then run spirit so your ipod will be untethered meaning even if you reboot your ipod still it is on CFW.
nope doesn't look like I can access SSH.. says connection refused with WinSCP. and no I'm not using vista. I'm on XP

right click

goto properties

goto the compatibility tab
click the run this program in compatibility mode for :
then click vista

then apply and try again

this has been suggested elsewhere before.
sorry if it don't work
My advice would be. . .. . . .

Get a Zune. No need for jailbreaking to get free apps.
