no they don't. they simply lower the machine's capacity, if there's any excess power, they simply store it somewhere and continue to lower the capacity after the earth hour.

it's something you get for free.. and can make with pretty much nothing... and has no emissions...

Indirectly. Think of how the electricity is generated - by burning coal/gas.
Stopping usage for 1hr will hardly amount to much, but that's not the point, since this is more of an awareness campaign.

Yes. A most of the electricity is generated that way.
Solar is too expensive, hydro and wind are too location limited, and nuclear is getting nowhere because of hurr durr-ing conservatives.
And coal is still the cheapest.
