So, I finally managed to get a copy of the Monster Hunter 3 demo a few days ago. So, being one of EP's veteran Monster Hunters, here's what I think so far:
Weapons
*Gone are the Gunlances (cheap Lance imitation), Hunting Horns (pure FAIL), Dual Swords (awesome, but definitely overpowered) and Bows (decent, but no match for a Bowgun).
*Switch Axe = WIN. An axe that turns into a sword? And it's got an insane powered-up attack? 'Nuff Said.
Monsters
*Great Jaggi - Basically a replacement for the Velocidrome and other similar raptor bosses.
*Qurupeco - The Kut-Ku's replacement, but can be even more annoying if it calls in another boss monster.
*Rathian - yes, the Rathian is in the demo, but only if Qurupeco calls for it. I haven't fought it too much on the demo, but from what I've seen, it's a lot more dangerous than it was in previous appearances. Still working on killing it in the 20 minutes allowed.
Swimming
*Fighting monsters on land is cool, fighting monsters underwater should be even better! The demo doesn't give you much to kill underwater, just some harmless poo poo...
Overall
*Demo is good, but now I have to wait about a month until the game's released...at least I'll stay entertained until then :D
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now then, on to the GameStop rant. I've read on a number of Monster Hunter boards that many people are having trouble getting the FREE demo from GameStop, as a number of their employees are insisting that you MUST pre-order the game to receive the demo. Capcom themselves have denounced these actions, stating the the demo is FREE and does not require a pre-order.
As for me, I had to go to two different GameStops to get mine. At the first one, I asked if the demo was free, just to be sure that I wasn't accused of stealing or anything. I'd already read on numerous sites that the demo was free. That's when the guy running the store told me I had to pre-order to get the demo. I told him about what I had read and that I knew I was right, to which he quickly replied "Well, wee're right." I really wanted to argue with him, but honestly, he wasn't worth the time or energy, so I left, and I'll probably never go to that one again.
So, I go to another GameStop right down the street. I started talking with the guy in charge there and told him about what happened at the other GameStop. I expected him to act like the first dude, but he nicely told me that they were free. So I thanked him and left to slay some monsters.
Now for the worst part. I've read on some of the monster hunter boards that some gamestop employees have admitted to knowing the demo was free, but were ordered by their district managers to give them out only with pre-orders so they make a profit. That's just wrong.
Finally, for those who made it through this lengthy, sleep-inducing blog, I shall reward you with some humor:
