It is mildly interesting how parents seem to think marks are the most important aspect of a person's life. I have met very few parents who were more interested in finding out where their child's true potential lay.
I guess it is not entirely parents fault, but it is as the educational (and the subsequent) society is designed and evolved. I am sure that many will have come across super genius types who could excel in daily life, if only their attention span (or interest) in studies was normal. And not to forget the studious dumbfudges who only read textbooks and notes, get awesome marks but are, well, dumbfudges.
Of course, I am not saying that toppers are dumb. I am saying that the current education system is way too harsh and competitive that many students never learn what they actually like to do. Very few actually go out of the way, despite risks involved, to find their interest. I mean, education should not be like the competitive field of earning money. Agreed that this concept has pros like preparing one for the harsh world, making on hard working, quick thinking etc, but it also has equal number of cons (some have been listed).
But overall, I find that education system in the West is vastly different than that in Asia. Asian schools are way more grueling and demanding. I guess it would have to do with the fact that general population to job vacancies to number of applicants ratio is very different. It is not uncommon (in any country, worldwide) for top performing students to land up at meager job that pays scantily.
I really wish the education system could change. But that is too much to ask. Most people are comfortable with this system. A broken watch is not broken if it is perceived as not broken. If its not perceived as broken, then it does not need repairs.
What were talking about?

Good thing my parents aren't so concerned about my test scores, to the point I think I'm more concerned about them myself.

Good thing I'm in college, and my parents don't find out about my grades.
