Endless Paradigm

Full Version: 720p VS 1080p - can you REALLY actually tell the difference?

Here's a little test I'm somewhat interested in.
Many people seem to base a lot of things about video quality on numbers, primarily the resolution, it seems.  So much so, that people naturally take that 1080p should look significantly better than 720p.
I decided to test something like that - does 1080p look objectively better than 720p for most people?  Note that I'm using a high quality resampler here though, so in reality, 720p might not look so good if you're relying on the upscaler that your media player etc uses.

Anyway, here's 3 1080p images, taken from the Big Buck Bunny trailer.  ONE is an upscale of a 720p image (in other words, 1080p » downscale to 720p » upscale back to 1080p).
Can you identify it?
(yes, I have deliberately chosen different scenes, so you can't easily do overlay compares to see which one it is)
EDIT: yes I know some images may have more detail than others, but I've chosen these as the original 1080p images contain sufficient detail when heavily scrutinised.

I've put the images in links, as they're quite large PNGs.
If you wish to conduct this test, please do so without looking at other posts before you make yours, so that what you see isn't distorted by other peoples' opinions - I'm leaving a gap after this post for this reason.
Also, please state what made you choose one over the others, and how you viewed the image (ie did you zoom in?  just look at it?).
Thanks

Spoiler:

It looks sharpened.
That line under the hole makes me think it was resized and sharpened.
Also b and c look the same quality to me.

I think it's a :S
Spoiler:
Methinks A is upscaled but the diferences are tiny.
Personally though I don't bother with 1080p resolution video. The LCD on my laptop does to 1280x800 and my "HD" TV goes to 1280x720 so anything above that is pointless.
