by this, i mean... what turned you from watching the odd little bit or seeing it around... to watching it when the seasons come out, keeping up with the news... and inevitably picking up a very very basic knowledge of japanese from it (unless you study it already).

I'm actually still not at that stage yet (and probably prefer never to get there to be honest).

My traditional style of watching anime is to have the whole thing and cram in a few (1-3) nights, and I still much prefer that to keeping up with stuff (tried keeping up with stuff, but never works out that well).  Picking based on rating and peer impression (like from you guys) is much more accurate than picking randomly, and watching large blocks at once keeps the mood intact, also get a better selection of fansub group choices (especially dual audio and/or DVD/BD rips, which you can never get when keeping up with stuff).  As for keeping up with the news, the only anime related site I keep up with is the TokyoTosho torrent listing (and EP too if you consider this an anime related site).

That being said, I still watch quite a bit more than I did lets say 6 years ago, and what caused that?  Nothing in particular I think, more like a slow accumulation over time.  If I'm forced to say something, probably Orphen (Sorcerer Stabber Orphen), from a long time ago.

That, replace the German TV with Australian TV.  First experience with actual anime (not kid's stuff like Pokemon) was on Chinese TV when I went there sometime during my primary school days, I remember seeing Saint Seiya and Slam Dunk.

I started watching (on and off) anime back in 98, was it? I started watching DBZ, and being at that age, I guess it intrigued me.

I never watched DBZ or anything, what really pulled me into "anime" was S-Cry-Ed; pretty manly of a show (my friend showed me it :P)

though i do act like i watch a lot of anime (avatar, sig) i actually haven't watched anything for a year now

Though i do like to keep up with sankaku, but that's more for the lulz >_>; i just adore the art XD

I started watching it when I was little (8 years old), but didn't really care much, because I only rented them...  ANYways 2 years ago on newyears eve, (a-few minutes after my stepbrother had humped my leg, like a horny dog, FOR THE SECOND TIME) browsing threw the tv channels and nothing good on, wee came across a DEATHNOTE marathon, but wee never finished watching it because wee got tired... after a few days my sister said she wanted to finish watching the show (Major emo wannabe) so I said "fine" and wee finished off (on the internets) and after that I just decided to start from A-Z but stopped doing that and have just been watching random shows lately... :D

i blame TV.
