Stuck at that part where Zack meets Genesis on the bridge, and one his copies eats Zack's hair and mutates into some monster.

I found the story mode of Crisis Core quite easy. I went through every battle using Firaga (or Blizzaga) over and over and Osmoga when I needed MP.

I guess that's my problem.  I rush into battles only attacking, and using mostly Curaga, and neglecting to use other magic, thinking I can make it with pure strength alone :/

I've hardly touched the normal attack. If it wasn't for the fact it's so easy to manage your MP, I'd probably be touching it more, but there's a shop menu you can open at any time outside a battle, limit breaks and osmose.
