im bored of my current OS configuration. so, to make a nice change, im upgrading to windows 7, and switching my linux distro. naturally ill be running 32 bit 7, so i can play oblivion, but does anyone have any ideas for my new distro? heres what im looking for.

-i already know the kernel very well, thanks to running slackware for an extended period of time, so a lot of control over console commands is a plus
-i prefer the gnome desktop envionment
-i want something with a lot of GUI, because sometimes i don't feel like having to manually do anything
-most importantly! i need one with a preconfigured graphical wifi application with WPA fully enabled right out of the box. i got really sick of having to manually add stuff to the configuration files in slackware, and especially got irritated at having to manually connect to the wifi network everytime i turned on my machine.

i know theres a website that automatically chooses a distro that you would like, but i want to know if anyone here has a suggestion for me to try.

thanks

64bit runs 32bit applications (Oblivion in your case) just fine.  I would say just run 64bit.  It's superior.

no, oblivion does not seem to be compatible...

That's the Vista one... can't seem to find anything in the Windows 7 one.

Supposedly, you an get it to work... scroll to the bottom of this page for more info

Meh, Oblivion is the most bugged piece of software I've ever used.  It randomly crashes on me when I load a new area (like enter a house), when I save, and sometimes just crashes for no reason.  Gave up on the 2nd day of playing, also because it was running laggy as poo poo (way inefficient? because I can run HL2 on pretty high settings).

hmmm...
and yet its still my favorite game of all time.
Facepalm
such a decision...
All this talk made me think maybe I should try overclocking my integrated... Did some research, and holy fuck, supposedly it can overclock 90%, stable... I've like never even heard of 90% overclocks before, besides for using liquid nitro.

So I'm going to try overclocking it. Probably won't attempt 90% though, since that doesn't sound all that healthy.

Sorry for being off topic.
Oblivion works perfectly fine on XP64, so if there's anything with 64-bit compatibility, I strongly doubt any issue.  Might try on my current Windows 7 x64, but I'd be really surprised if it doesn't work.

Must have a bugged game?
I copied an original from friend and have played it quite a lot and it hasn't ever crashed on me yet.  By the way, this is with no patches applied - just the original retail disc.  There's bugs, ie you can stand in mid-air or look inside people at times, but nothing like you've described.
Oblivion was really heavy for its time - overworld would often lag on my 7800GT, though, considering how much stuff it renders (like distant landscapes) I'm not that surprised.

If you edit the INI you can reduce the quality of the graphics I believe.  Friend was running it on a Radeon 9600, though he said he had to make his trees look 2D to make it playable.

lol, im running max graphics, and have 21gb of mods (about 10 of which is retexture) and it runs fine, anywhere i go.
will i suffer in the graphics department on an upgrade to 7? i know it takes a lot more resources to run 7 than it does to run xp, so im just wondering.

Don't know, mine was from some ISO I downloaded.  I don't think it was edited.

EDIT: My brother used the exact same ISO, and it doesn't crash on his computer... Maybe incompatibilities?

What settings?  If you're using like the highest settings, then ofcourse it's pretty heavy - well known to be the most GPU intensive game of it's generation.

I can only get decent frames if I either set my resolution to 800x600 and use medium-ish settings, or alternatively keep the resolution, but set all the visual settings very low (not 2D trees lowest, but almost).  I prefer the 800x600.

And my integrated Radeon HD3200 way more beast than a Radeon 9600.  9600 can dream in hell about playing HL2 on medium-high settings.

Dunno what it's served through since I don't run Linux on a desktop.  If it's a daemon » runlevels?
Otherwise compiling your own Linux is cool - can do an optimizing compile for your CPU or if you're really pedantic, a profiled build.  And put all the parts you want.  Does take effort I'd imagine though.

I can't imagine much so.  From what I've read, games have similar performance.  DX10 on Vista sucked, I know.

Close to highest (without INI modification).
