vinnydisilvio Wrote:well, wee all knew they were doing something differently. i just confirmed that it's something different in addition to previous firmware checks...

downloaded the peace walker demo from IGN. tried running it without any editing. the gameboot didn't even load...instead i got the message that i needed at least Sony OFW 5.51 in order to run the demo.

so i went into the EBOOT and found the firmware check (!). in the opening lines of the file there is a very clear "551" string. changed it to 500. replaced the old eboot with my new one and...GAMEBOOT LOADS. then, heartbreak: still getting the error after the gameboot plays "The game could not be started". 2 firmware checks? guess it's easier to add a layer of security rather than to fix the old one :-P

that demo only requires the version.txt to be changed in flash.  It is not the same as retail game securities :(

does it use an encrypted boot file?
^ Don't demos usually come in EBOOT format as opposed to UMDs?

yeah but what's within that?

or am I totally off the right track here. xD
An ELF file.
yeah, demos come in eboot, but i thought the security would be the same as ISOs. guess not. makes sense, as they're giving you the demo for free anyway so they don't really care if you spoof the firmware requirement. keep thinking i guess...

in the mean time, here's something interesting i found:

http://www.pspgen.com/game-decrypter-fai...90003.html

it's written by someone who claims to be part of the GEN team. i don't understand most of it, but from the sound of it on this thread http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=143419, it sounds like this may be what i was looking for.

of course, without actual proof it could be total bullchocolate. here's hoping it's not...

oh yeah yoshiro has a good reputation in the psp cfw scene (since he's a member of GEN team, he might give a good shot about bypassing firmware check)
k, so i used the instructions here to play the peace walker demo (full instructions are found by clicking "more info" in the description). sure, you have to jump through a few hoops but it's an interesting method of playing a game that normally requires a higher firmware than the GEN team has released. i then tried to play another recently released game in ISO format but it's a no go. i think it probably requires 6.00.

if yoshiro is able to complete his game decrypter, hopefully that will be the last piece of the puzzle to play very recent game backups on a CFW.
