Quote:The Internet Industry Association (IIA) has drafted a new code of conduct that suggests Internet Service Providers (ISPs) contact, and in some cases disconnect, customers that have malware-infected computers.
The drafted code, which will not be mandatory, suggested ISPs take a four-step approach to protecting customers.
* Identification of compromised computers
* Contact affected customer
* Provision of information and advice to fix the compromised system; and
* A reporting function for alerting about serious scale threats, such as those, that may threaten national security.
"Once an ISP has detected a compromised computer or malicious activity on its network, it should take action to address the problem. ISPs should therefore attempt to identify the end user whose computer has been compromised, and contact them to educate them about the problem," the new code states.
Chief regulatory officer of ISP iiNet, Steve Dalby, said he would adhere to the code if the process could be automated and development costs weren't prohibitive.
"Potentially it's something that wee would do. If there were some costs wee might consider whether government funding was available, but again it's very hypothetical," Dalby said.
IBRS analyst James Turner welcomed the move and said ISPs should be able to find a way to fund the initiative.
"They'll find a way of commercialising it and making it, at the very least, cost neutral if not cost positive," he said.
Turner said it was reasonable to expect a form of "quality control" for computers connected to the internet in a similar way cars need to be roadworthy.

I guess it's interesting on the one level, but could have issues as well.
Well, at least it's a better chance for the Linux OS to get bigger, since Windows PCs would be cut off from the internet, lol.
And it seems like the Australian gov't has way too much restriction on things.

ISP: Buy a Mac or install Linux. You really wouldn't be bothered with the 50-step plan I have for you.

You realize it's the users, rather than the OS, that's responsible for getting virus', right?
Of course, the average Linux user has a way higher level of computer knowledge than the average Windows user, but that's not the OS' fault either.

I'm sure he does - but its about awareness isn't it.
How many people will be bothered.
Primarily to do something about it and Secondly to spend an annual fee on protection on Windows systems.
Having Linux doesn't make you immune to virus. It's not like you can act like a complete retard, download every random suspicious thing you find, and expect the OS to magically repel every virus' like how fire repels insects. You'd still get fucked just like you would with Windows, maybe in 1/2 an hour rather than in 5 minutes, but it's definitely going to happen.

theres a difference between awareness and retardedness.
But I doubt it would take half an hour. Linux is much, much more secure than Windows. That's not the OSs fault (Windows) its just Malware is made for it.

That's a pretty quirky way to try to annoy your ISP. A much easier way doesn't require this - just remove the network driver or something and complain the internet doesn't work.
They actually probably have staff who can use Mac, but some random Unix based OS? Not a chance...

And that's what it's about, awareness, not the OS. He was saying it'll pretty much cut Windows off the internet. Windows is not the main factor, the users are. So it should be "cut retards off the internet" instead.
And yes, I'm using Windows with nothing but a free antivirus. Used to have a firewall, don't even have that any more since Zone Alarm doesn't work on 64bit. Still, I pretty much never get virus', which means I could theoretically remove the antivirus too and still be fine. And Zinga mentioned in the past he doesn't use any antivirus at all. While some other people have like 4 security things, and still get infected every 2 weeks. It'll all up to the user.
