ubuntu is a linux based operating system, and the most popular of linux distrobutions. it is based off Debain, a linux distrobution that uses the slapt-get package manager, and comes with the gnome desktop by default. Ubuntu is arguably the easiest to use of all linux distrobutions, as almost all of its features come automatically set up, and anything that isn't set up checks for updates the first time that it accesses the internet. Many hard-core linux users hate ubuntu, as they feel that it removes the user too far from the linux kernel and its command line, and that it adds too many packages, and keeps the user from enjoying the full power of linux. ubuntu is kind of like the n00b-friendly linux. (to put in anime terms, ubuntu is like pokemon. everyone has used it, and most liked it while they used only it, but once they moved on to bigger and better things, they look down on it.)

ubuntu has several variants:
Kubuntu, which uses the KDE (K desktop environment)
Xubuntu, which uses Xfce
Edubuntu, which is school-oriented
Ubuntu JuOS, (just enough OS) which is for portable devices)

there are others as well.

also there have been several distros which have branched off ubuntu, the main ones being:
Alinex
Linux Mint
Mythbuntu

Canonical have done great making Linux so user-friendly (though still barely touching Windows) and being able to do the FreeCD/DVD Campaigns must help the popularity of Linux loads.
