a bunch of my friends who are computer science(spelling? its late/early) majors all got windows 7 free. im jealous, i wanted to try it. but NO, i had to choose Computer Engineering instead of computer science... ridiculous. I know more about computers than most of those guys anyway. i guess it doesn't matter, so long as i can eventually fix my slackware...
It's probably Windows 7 Professional (what MSDNAA gives out). You could ask them for a copy lol.
But are you sure you can't access it? All engineering students (even non-computer related) can access MSDNAA at our Uni.

edit: upon further looking, you are correct. i just need a student id number...
i could of got windows 7 for free if i went to the dell training at work
but i hate dell and would never offer it to anyone so i didnt goto the non paid training for 3 hours for some os disc :S
:O I never got emails, lol.
Someone told me about it. Well, I can access it by doing a search for "MSDN" from my Uni homepage, so I guess you could try that.
yeah... i got it now. i just want my slackware back lol. but i might upgrade from xp now
By the way, in regards to Linux, you could try an easier to use distro. Probably a good idea before getting into things.
Or you could try an LFS, lol:

I wonder if I can get myself a copy. I should try, but seriously doubt it'll work. Commerce student, nothing to do with IT or engineering.
I already got a copy running right now, but that's not exactly... 100% legit.
All versions of W7 out now are either leaked beta, or Windows 7 Professional build 7600, which was RTM.
I use the latter, and it is sweet like candy.
