So what, is this basically going to be Oblivion with guns? Cause if so, I'm pre-ordering it.
Have you ever played any of the previous games?  It will probably have the same perspective and controls.  I trust that Bethesda won't make any major screw ups that would ruin it for fans of the series, but there isn't alot of information on it yet.

I'm a little bit skeptical about the Fallout MMO from Interplay though.  They had to cancel the initial Fallout 3 because of budget cuts, and now after selling the rights to the series they have alot of requirements to keep their new license rights.  First they have to start developing it within the next 23 months, then release the game within 4 years of starting development.  They also have to secure at least $30 million within the 23 months before they start development.  If they had so much trouble making a single player sequel to the series when they owned it I don't know how they are going to make a decent MMO for the series with all of those restrictions.  It seems like Bethesda got quite a deal for the $5.75 million they spent for the series rights though, as they also will get 12% of all sales and subscription fee of the game.
The reason I thought it would be Oblivion with guns is because Bethesda announced that it would be running on the GameBryo engine, the same engine that Oblivion ran on. So I just assumed that they would keep the engine roughly the same because of how much time and money it would take to change it up
The GameBryo engine was designed to be very flexible, it has been used in many games that have a completely different type of perspective and gameplay than Oblivion.  In fact most game engines that I know of are quite flexible, and even if they do require some sort of change for those differences it would be a minimal amount of work and a small cost for a project this size (otherwise they wouldn't use it).  I'm betting that Bethesda is going to try and make the game appealing to fans of the series and new players all at the same time, and making Oblivion with a Fallout facelift probably isn't the best way to go about that.  At least not for the next sequel, when I think about it I rather like the idea for a spinoff or new series entirely.  Fallout with the type of perspective of an Elder Scrolls game could be tons of fun, and they might fit very well together.

Hmm... Maybe they will try to reinvent the series, hell they own it now.  If Fallout 3 fails they could try this before dumping the series or abandoning it, or use the idea to start a whole new game series.
If it was Oblivion with guns, I'd poo poo my pants with happiness.
I be the younger brother of the Village Idiot. He has been ogling Fallout 3. I am an avid oblivion fan, and all of my friends play it. I don't really know if i would like a game to that scale with GUNS, and the epicness of the fantasy setting would not be as... well, epic if it was more modern. So i think that if it was DIFFERENT from oblivion, it would be sexy.
:mdr:
When you use the term "Oblivion with Guns", i am hoping it is being used very loosely. I dunno if climbing a mountain with a horse while performing a drive-by would be a serious game.
edited your post a bit

hope you don't mind

you had some random ep smiley link
Well, they unveiled a bunch of detail on Fallout 3 in Game Informer, and I got to say, it looks spectacular. It's either first person or over the shoulder camera, even deeper character customization than Oblivion, and unique voice actors for each character. Also, you can get a man-portable nuclear rocket launcher. :D
