People are always looking for the best value, but really, how expensive can you get?

Requirements:
  • CPU must be x86/x86-64 based
  • Can only have one motherboard (so no grids)
  • Must be a "desktop" machine (though you can use a different form factor than ATX)
  • All components must *do something*, ie no LEDs.  I'll exclude cooling solutions (so you can't have huge platinum/gold systems) as well as the case
  • Following on from above, the system must actually work (obviously) and each component has to be active (ie no random stray components)
  • This is only for the box - do not include monitors, keyboards, printers, airplanes, etc
  • I have to use some sort of "benchmark" so that you don't just pick the most expensive thing you can find - you must use the cheapest price for the component from http://staticice.com.au/ (if you have a better place, please post)

Do you think you can break the $100k mark?

So no, still haven't done it :P

Oh, should add, this is only for the box itself, you can't include printers/monitors etc
my mate has a desktop with a quad core 2.80GHZ procesor and 8GB of ram wit a 500GB harddrive and 1GB graphics card.
    never lagged on anything

don't know how much it cost him though

That's nothing. Won't even come close to being the most expensive. If you really tried, you can get that in under $1000.

Go find a 4x4 server board or something (the most expensive one supporting the most stuff... so you can spend money getting all that stuff), get 4 of these ultra expensive server quads, like 128GB of DDR3 RAM (the really really expensive super-high-end ones), and that's more like it.
I really doubt anyone could make a functional computer exceeding 5-10k mark. Of course I do not include industry level computing or super computer. I rather refer to hard core gaming.
