when you are talking with someone (say a friend) and they get a vacant look (like they are thinking or something) and when you ask what's up they give the reply:

"Nothing much"

So irritating.... because common courtesy requires you to ask again... cause its nothing much! Not nothing at all.... and if you don't ask and your conversation partner turs out to be a girl, then its as if you don't care......

Another of the similar irritating expressions is "Not really" (when asked "are you thinking about something?")

The best part is that I love saying it.... but its meant to be a dismissive gesture.

Lol why?

If someone answered "nothing much", it probably shows that either 1). there nothing that's worth talking about, or 2). there's something that's worth talking about, but they obviously don't want to tell you.

In both situations, the best thing to do would be just to drop it. It'll be more discourtesy than courtesy to try and force something out of them.

If I said "nothing much", and you ask me the same thing again, then I'll probably still say "nothing much". You ask again, and it'll probably be something like "what the fuck man, didn't I tell you twice already?" or "learn to take a hint. It's an important life skill".

Don't you just hate it... when people ask you the same thing over and over again?
