Ore No Ryouri is one of those games that if you haven't played it and someone tries to explain it to you, your first thought would probably be: how can this kind of game be any fun, or I don't think this is something for me.

Well this is where a lot of people go wrong, Ore No Ryouri is in fact one of the best games on the PSone, period.

If this game would have been released on the Saturn it would have been without a doubt one of the favorites on the system and everyone would have mentioned it with games like NiGHTS, Panzer Dragoon, Sega Rally, etc. But as it stands now, Ore No Ryouri is nothing more than a curiosity, which only the people who have played it can see the real beauty of it, and most others don't even know that it exists, or think about it as "that cooking game", which is a real shame.

Basically you are a chef and it's your job to prepare food and drinks for your customers. You will NEED a Dual shock controller, since the preparation of the food is done with the 2 analog sticks. The way the game works is that customers come in the restaurant and order something, this order will appear on the left side of the screen and will slowly fade of the screen, when the order is gone, the customers patience has run out and he will leave the restaurant upset. You can have up to 6 different orders sitting at the left side of the screen at once. You are free to pick which orders you want to prepare first.

                          

There are 9 different restaurants ranging from Fast Food chains, Family restaurant, Ethnic restaurant, etc. all with their own dishes and drinks. Let's say you started in the Ramen place.

When a customer orders a bowl of ramen, you will first have to slice the ingredients, this is done by slowly moving the left analog stick to the left (to guide the knife) and striking down with the right analog stick (to cut the meat, carrots, etc.).

The 2 analog sticks should be seen as your hands when preparing food.

The 2nd step would be to cook the ramen. When you select the ingredients you've just chopped, they will go into the pot and start boiling. At this point the little order slip will start changing color, from dark blue to red hot, to indicate how much the ingredients are cooked. You can see the dish is done when steam starts rising from the pot.

The final step is to pour the ramen into a bowl. This is simply done by pushing down on the right analog stick, but be careful not to serve too little. but also not too much, or the bowl will overflow.

This is just one of the things that you will make. Another thing is tapping beer. This is done by pushing the left analog stick to the left to tilt the glass and then pushing down on the right analog stick to tap, while slowly letting go of the left stick, so you'll get a nice pint with a good head.

There are so many other dishes to make like French fries, hamburgers, milkshakes, shrimp, etc that it's not practical to explain them all here. ^__^



Well that's that then, right? Well.....no. not even close. For every step in the cooking process you will get graded from 1 to 10. Let's say your cutting carrots, if you don't slice them thin enough you won't get as many point, or if you cut your fingers, you will get penalty points. The same goes for undercooking food, burning food, not putting enough ketchup on the burgers, putting too much salt on the fries, spilling your milkshake, etc. You will also get a final score on how the dish was overall.

These are the finer points of the game, but there is more.

You can combine several customers orders (if they order the same thing, of course). Let's say you have only one customer who has ordered French fries, you can let him wait a little bit while you serve other people. By the time you are done there may be 3 customers who all want fries, so when you select the fries, instead of 1 order you will be preparing 3 orders at once. This will save you a lot of time, but also reward you with bonus points. This can be done with most orders that are made up of more then 1 step.

Now and again a gourmet expert will come in and order something, his order will be in green, instead of blue. This man is much more critical about the food you prepare for him, but also rewards you more when you get his order perfect.

Between preparing food and serving drinks you will also have to deal with drunks who come wandering in. You have a certain amount of time to call the cops on one of those old dial phones before the customers start to leave. Just a little note, be sure to call the police. Cause if you misdial you might wind up with the fire department at your door. ^__^

Other occasions like this include crushing roaches with your feet, doing the dishes, counting money and chasing after a ninja (thief?) in the streets.

The games different modes are:


Story mode:
Where you unlock other restaurants by doing a good job and having a cook of against the main chef at the end of the stage.

Free play:
This is a great part which is classed under the story mode, but you can choose which stage to play an go for the high score.

3 Minute Cooking:
Here you have to try and make as much money as possible within the time limit.

VS Mode:
The wonderful VS mode which can be played against either the computer or a friend. This mode can be fully customized, so you can pick only your favorite dishes for a 1 on 1.

Omake:
Some simple minigames, which help you to enhance your technique.



Now if all of this sounds intimidating, don't worry. It's as simple as can be. The only hard part is trying to explain just how this game works to someone who has never experienced it. ^__^

Within 30 minutes you will start getting used to the controls and be flipping burgers and tapping beer.

This is pure arcade gaming at it's best, no doubt about it. An essential purchase for any gamer who likes to have fun and is into arcade games.
