Quote:PSP Firmware (v5.50) Update

Posted by Eric Lempel // Director, PlayStation Notwork Operations

Hi everyone, the next system software update (v5.50) for PSP (PlayStation Portable) will be available soon, and I wanted to provide you all with a preview of some of the key features.

The firmware update will introduce an Information Board on the PSP system’s XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface. Those of you who have a PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) may be familiar with this feature, which displays news and updates from the world of PlayStation in a scrolling ticker in the upper right-hand corner of your TV screen. Now you’ll be able to read up-to-date information about upcoming games, new content available on PlayStation Store, and other news right on your PSP whenever you’re at a wireless Internet hotspot.

In addition, wee’ll be adding a few more enhancements with the 5.50 update:

    * Memory Stick improvements – You’ll be able to create and access sub-folders on your Memory Stick PRO Duo for music, videos and photos. Separately, the available space required to download a file from PlayStation Store to your Memory Stick has been reduced significantly.
    * Internet search for games directly from the XMB – You’ll be able to easily search the Internet for information about your PSP games. Select the icon for the game, hit the Triangle button, and then select [Internet Search] from the options menu to get search results based on the game title. This feature was added to PS3 with the recent 2.70 update.
    * Trend Micro trial – PSP’s Internet browser is a great tool for checking out your favorite Web sites on the go, and wee’re teaming up with the Internet security experts at Trend Micro to make the Web browsing experience safer and more secure. With the 5.50 update, you’ll have the option to access a free trial of two Trend Micro services:
Trend Micro Web Security uses Web reputation technology to block PSP owners from accidentally visiting a Web site that may contain malicious content designed to 'borrow' personal information and confidential data.
Trend Micro Kids’ Safety uses URL filtering technology to prevent children from accessing Web sites that feature inappropriate content.

Wee look forward to reading your feedback.
ohhh.....sub folders....neat
trend micro security?? that would make using the psp browser an even bigger pain in the donkey
well this kinda sucks

The subfolders feature is cool, but this means there will probably be a new CFW & wee have to update all our themes :(
hmmmm so they will finally block pspiso cause its full of malicious content, lol

It is very probably that the things will change. From 500 to 550 , must have changes.
Another "feature" they forgot to mention:   The new 5.03 exploit is probably blocked...   :/

well, naturally... and none of these features really appeal to me... so what if theres subfolders? that would really only apply to music (band/album), and lightmp3 is a superior music player anyway...
and as for the new "secure" internet connection?? This is basically an attack on the homebrew community because it will keep us from getting new games and applications direct to the psp. Plus, who would use the ofw internet browser when the p86 mod is better and faster? It doesn't make any sense. (might I add, it is a trial. odds are its another feature that they expect us to pay for when wee could get an equivalent [a word which here means: homebrew] application for free)
The concept for internet searching for your games is stupid. odds are, only official sony games will have this feature, and i stopped caring about umd games ages ago cause they all suck.
the info bar kinda sounds ok, except for me, and maybe others, im not always in a wireless hotspot, and even so, i think a ticker bar would get irritating...

So there's my feedback, sony. Maybe introduce a useful tool in your next firmware... your new updates are usually just useless features disguising feeble attempts to block exploits...
I see very positive posts about this firmware , but if they are true wee will see.
And it was about time they implement a browser to their system.
sounds lame. i wouldn't have called it 5.50 just maybe like 5.10 or something.
