Hi

Now out is the new application by Skype Inc., for using Skype. Previously there was Fring, but the audio quality and interface is vastly improved.

This application is most importantly FREE, and is available to download hot off of the App Store. I've found this to be a very fluid application, and works extremely intuitively.

On this app, in comparison to Fring, you can do everything you can inside Skype on PC or Mac. A nice little feature was being able to take a picture from the camera on the iPhone, and having it instantly as your display picture.

Sign-In is lightning fast, even on 3G, though there is a restriction wee'll get back to.

On a Wi-Fi connection, for example in McDonald's, it'll function just like a normal phone. Call quality is superb, on both ends (yes i tested, by calling myself, and Skype test call). You can also chat simultaneously with your contacts, with text, and send links, which will subsequently open with Safari. Nice.

Skype also has the accelerometer functionality, to disable the touch screen and button in a call when it is lifted to your face. When removed from your face, the screen lights up and enables you to use it.

While I've been telling you about the ups, there are a few downers too. At the moment, there is no support for VoIP over a 3G or EDGE network. Daymn. But I have been informed by the interwebs, that those of you (the vast minority, but hey) on iPhone/iPod Touch OS 3.0, CAN do 3G/EDGE VoIP. This may mean, in the future it will be set free, lets keep hoping.

Canadian Users, will be stuck with a severely crippled version of the program, where you may only communicate with text, and VoIP is disabled. This is due to some licensing/law which stop the program being legal.

Also, for those jailbroken users, i know I'm new to it all, but still. When you open up Skype, it may do either of these 2 things.
  • Crash
  • Crash after 30 seconds or up to 1 minute of it being open.

Now, don't fret, like i did. I did some skimming over the interwebs again, and the solutions are VERY simple. What causes the app to crash instantaneously, are text field add-ins. By this i mean, you are not allowed custom keyboard click sounds, or more importantly the Plug-In known as Clippy (Copy and Paste) to be active. This will, like mine did, make it crash instantly.
Just disable/uninstall Clippy and revert your Click sounds to default and it'll sign in.

After i did this, it kept crashing while using it. This is a problem with MobileSubstrate, which has been fixed now, just go to Cydia, and update it. Problem Solved.

Hope you like my little documentation of this new app, I'm quite excited about it's future.
