They serve different purposes.
Wee have carpet for the whole top level, which consists mostly of bedrooms, studys. Carpet is more comfortable, and warmer to step on.
Dark wooden floorboards for most of the middle level, for the lounge (living room), corridors, formal dining, and rooms. Floorboards looks better, gives a more "formal" (or my parents put it, "rich") look?
Bottom level has carpet, but since that's permanently locked off from the rest of the house and rented off to other people, over the years, the carpet has become dirty as hell, like originally light blue, now mostly dark greyish, and full of stains. Will probably just strip it all and replace with cheap vinyl or something, they can try to dirty that up all they like.
