Drivers would be extremely problematic.  And setting up more than you need to isn't exactly entertaining either.  Googling the question might take seconds, but reading through the articles, as well as the junk articles, then searching & reading articles to explain what the articles say ("what's WINE???  repository???"), can take well over seconds...

^that, also, she didn't had internet for doing that (says the story)

Library?

Crappy Library filters?

adult libraries don't filter much except hershey kisses?
The lady should have demanded a windows OS. Instead she had to be stupid and automatically blame Ubuntu.

I just long for the day people start realizing Ubuntu is actually an OS they should make drivers/software for. The companies are just greedy and don't want open-source software...

Completely true, if more people started using ubuntu then companies would have to make linux compatible software. That's what microsoft is worried about. They want to be a monopoly that forces crappy OS's down our throats. If only adobe would make linux compatible software then others would follow.

competition = lower prices for the consumers

i don't see how can microsoft be a monopoly, its that everyone just rather stick to it, they don't have to do open source apps for Linux, they could just do private apps for linux and done. win-win
When you buy a prebuilt PC you automatically get windows as an OS. Now that some companies (like Dell) are giving people an option. Who do you think gets pissed off that theres now competition? I think that Microsoft set this story up to not only scare consumers, but to also scare companies like Dell that are giving people a choice in an OS.
dell won't stop selling ubuntu laptops, there are still plenty people in this world who knows what they want >:3
Lol it doesn't make much difference to anyone who knows how to torrent what OS comes on their system
I think the majority of you posting in this thread are rather inconsiderate.

Don't expect anyone to exhibit the same level of computer understanding as you do. Suppose you knew nothing about automobiles, and ended up thrashing a gasoline powered automobile by tanking it with diesel? Yes, the comparison is pretty far out there, but I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate automobile savvy people having a laugh at your predicament.

I don't think it is an unwillingness to learn from her side, but more that she doesn't know where to look in the first place.

Also I don't understand why Microsoft is to be blamed for what happened. Dell chose to put Linux on the brand of laptops. MATC chose to make Microsoft Word a requirement for its online courses.
The only thing Microsoft is at fault at here is making products that are used by the majority.

Sure, there's Openoffice. But not everyone know about openoffice, or where to learn more about it. Also openoffice cannot handle the newest text file format used by MS Word, which maybe also could have posed a problem.

Dell does give support after all.  If you've spent a fortune on an automobile, and you were having issues with it, who'd be the first person you'd see?  Even if you couldn't get to the original seller, chances are you'd see someone who's an expert in the field, or at least, refer you to someone who's an expert in the field (ie a car repair shop etc).
Finding someone to help you out really isn't the difficult part here...
