So my life is weird. As I was saying in my little poem thingy, I made some drastic changes to the relationship I have with my best friend. She was very good about listening, which I'm glad for. I'm not gonna go into details, but things are getting better.
I'm also back on my super-diet again. I'm almost down to my first goal of 300 lbs (I started at ~330). It's actually kinda cool, I was talking to my one friend's roommates (she lived with her friend and her friend's husband), and he's kind of a body builder type. I told him what I was at at the time (around 315) and how tall I was (a little under 6'3") and he got all surprised, and said that I was extremely muscular. He said that I looked, at most, 280. That made me feel good. Anyway, yeah. I'm at about 305 now, my goal is 260 by the summer.
Also, I'm getting another lens. I decided to get a Tamron 90mm Macro, plus a set of Kenko electronic extension tubes if I want to do even more detailed than 1:1. All in all it'll run me about $550, but hey, I'm getting student loan money in a few months, so that should help a bit.
What made you decide on the Tamron 90mm?
Why not the Canon 100? or Sigma 105? or sigma 70
Just curious :)
Also I recommend at least a monopod, I am gonna get one soon as even at 1:1 you WILL have a really hard time getting the focus where you want it. Also a flash, I realized how important light is in macro photography and have ordered the Vivitar 285HV online, gonna get hotshoe adapter and cable later on to place it off camera to let me place the light where I want it.
Also why not skip the extension tubes for the moment, With my 70mm with canon 50mm reversed in front I got up to 1.5:1 times life size, with my 200mm telephoto with the 50mm reversed in front of it I got up to 4:1 yes 4X life size!
I really just want to get a reverse coupling ring now :)
A professional photographer who does a lot of macro endorsed Tamron heavily, as they don't have the name brand inflation of Canon's stuff, but don't have the cheap quality of most 3rd party stuff. And I was aiming for a ~100mm lens anyway, so the 90 works for me. And the reversing of the lens is really cumbersome and unreliable in my opinion, plus the extension rings aren't that much more for what you get.
I'm also making a ring light with an old hot shoe flash my grandpa is giving me.

Yes, strobist.
But don't always trust these ads as these photographers are paid for them and prolly get the lens for free so why not endorse it.
ALSO I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you check the voltage output on that flash as older flashes designed for film cameras have ridiculously high output voltages that digital cameras (Canon can only take about 6v) can't take, some even go up to 300v and can fry your hotshoe. So be CAREFUL!
Also ok I see your reasons, have fun with what you get, I am having fun with my sigma 70mm prime dubbed the sharpest lens sigma has made, this lens is so sharp from corner to corner wide open it's unbelievable.
Oh and By the way not all 3rd party things are cheap quality. Just look at the Sigma 50mm f1.4, people will prefer it over the Nikon and Canon counterparts, and my sigma 70mm is built REALLY sturdy it even has a METAL lens hood :)
I like sigma EX lenses. :)
besides, I can have my sigma lenses calibrated in a nearby store :)
Oh and just as a last thought, you know you can't focus to infinity with extension tubes right?
Reading this thread reminded me that I had a really old Miranda 700CD flash and it works with ma dSLR!! YYAYY! My grandad (who's dead, wish he wasn't now) was a photographer/journalist :) damn he could have taught me so much stuffs...
Well good for you two.
@ MG you can still use it off-cam even if it has high voltages.
At least you guys get free flashes, I just can occasionally borrow lenses from my aunt.
Ordered my flash online, still waiting
What camera dya have MG?
dslrs over 10D can have flashes that are upto 250v.

Wee have the same, 450d.
Also I thought all dSLRs from canon can only take up to 6v, whered you hear this?
I was looking it up just now and every camera over 10D has a different chip. Only the 10D can take upto 6V
Can't remember what site... :/
Well, that may be through the PC chord but one really does not know.
